Chlorinated Insecticides in the Body Fat of People in the United States

Abstract: Benzene hexachloride and dieldrin are present in the body fat of people in the general population of the United States. The mean concentration of dieldrin is 0.15 +/- 0.02 parts per million, which is in good agreement with the concentration reported for southern England. The mean concentration of benzene hexachloride is 0.20 +/- 0.04 ppm, which is considerably lower than the mean concentration reported for France. Paired analyses of DDT by gas chromatographic and colorimetric methods show that the results of t… Show more

“…Furthermore, the residues show somewhat higher levels for men than for women (figure 4). Although the residue buildup of DDT and HCH in the general population of India was not found to be as high as reported earlier (4,23,24), there is still need for close monitoring of the bioaccumulation of these chemical residues in Indians. The causal relationship between the regular inhalation of various kinds of dust and disease is well known.…”

“…Earlier reports from India (2,4,IS,23,24) have indi cated varying levels of DDT and HCH in human fat samples (table I). All the se reports were confined , however, to the north zone of India.…”

“…Due to its stability and its capacity to accumulate in adipose tissue, it is found in human tissues, and there is now not a single living organism on the planet that does not contain DDT [22]. Since man in at the top of the food chain he receives and accumulates insecticide residues that vegetables and animals have stored up in various periods of development [23], [24] thus posing a challenge to the ecologists and toxicologists.…”

“…The amount of DDT present in human body fat has been estimated to be 11 ppm (Woodwell, 1967). Dale and Quimby (1963) have estimated that the amount of dieldrin in human body fat in the United States is O.15 ppm -0.02 ppm. The mean amount of dieldrin in human body fat in England has been found to be somewhat higher.…”
