Chloride‐Free Method to Synthesise New Ionic Liquids with Mixed Borate Anions

Abstract: Chloride avoided! A new chloride-free method to synthesise ionic liquids (ILs) with mixed borate anions, starting from tetrafluoroborate compounds, has been developed and a number of examples including some new ILs are presented (see scheme; [CAT](+) = cation). It is widely applicable and allows access to mixed borates with various types of ligands in a straightforward manner.

“…The lithium salts LiPF 6 and LiBF 4 were purchased from Stella (high purity), lithium trifluoromethylsulfonate (LiOTf) from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt (high purity), bis(trifluoromethansulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) from 3 M (battery grade, HQ115) and LiBOB from Chemetall, Frankfurt (battery grade). LiDFOB was prepared by the synthesis route introduced by Schreiner et al [19] resulting in a fine white powder in quantitative yield. Thermal stability measurements were carried out with a Perkin-Elmer Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA-7).…”

“…During cooling down to room temperature the foil-quartz assembly was pressed together by a weight. 11 B-NMR (128.4 MHz) and 19 F-NMR (282.4 MHz) spectra were recorded on a Bruker Avance 400 spectrometer with BF 3 ·Et 2 O and CFCl 3 as external standards, respectively. The solvent used for hydrolysis measurements was deuteriumoxide (Deutero GmbH, Kastellaun, 99.9% D 2 O), mixed with DI water (1:1).…”

“…LiDFOB (lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate) was synthesized by SCHREINER et al (29) and was used as a solution in THF. In a preparation flask, approximately 0.75 g of the polysiloxane PSx-[P(EO) 3 OMe] 87.5% [PSi(OMe) 3 reaction solution was stirred for 6 h until a slight increase in viscosity was observed.…”
