CHLAMYDIA TRACHOMATIS AND HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS IgA ANTIBODIES IN CERVICAL SECRETIONS OF PATIENTS WITH CERVICAL ATYPIA

Abstract: Summary The association of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) with malignant or premalignant changes in the cervix uteri was studied by determining immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies in the cervical secretions of 28 women with inflammatory, 28 with dysplastic, 7 with malignant changes of the uterine cervix, and 26 healthy controls. In cervical secretions IgA antibodies to CT were found in 24 of 35 (69%) patients with malignant or premalignant changes, in 11 of 28 (39%) with cervicitis and… Show more

“…IgA antibodies for Chlamydia trachomatis were found in the cervical secretions in 13%, 5% and 6% of the women in groups I, I1 and 111, respectively. These numbers are similar to that (1 2%) reported for healthy Finnish women (Kalimo et al 1981).…”

“…Most of the epidemiological studies on CT/HSV co-infection rely on serological data [ 171 ], making it difficult to determine whether or not both pathogens were present simultaneously in the genital tract at any given time. Several studies described a high prevalence of CT and HSV seropositivity among men and women [ 172 , 173 , 174 , 175 ]. In a group of 35 patients with cervical dysplasia or cervical carcinoma, IgA antibodies to HSV were detected in the cervical secretions of 10 (28%), from which nine had IgA antibodies to CT [ 172 ].…”

In a group of 35 patients with cervical dysplasia or cervical carcinoma, IgA antibodies to HSV were detected in the cervical secretions of 10 (28%), from which nine had IgA antibodies to CT [ 172 ]. An examination of 88 students from tertiary institutions revealed that 9.1% of the participants had IgG antibodies present for both CT and HSV [ 175 ].…”

“…Dent & Bienenstock (1974), using indirect immunofluorescence, were unable to detect HSV-specific IgA or IgM in the cervicovaginal washings of patients with cervical SCC, although IgG-HSV was detectable in the washings from 37% of patients and 32% of controls. More recently, IgA antibodies to HSV2 were detected by radioimmunoassay in cervical secretions from 21 % of patients with cervical dysplasia and 57 % of patients with cervical cancer, but not in normal controls (Kalimo et al 1981).…”
