Chitosan−Silica Complex Membranes from Sulfonic Acid Functionalized Silica Nanoparticles for Pervaporation Dehydration of Ethanol−Water Solutions

Abstract: Nanosized silica particles with sulfonic acid groups (ST-GPE-S) were utilized as a cross-linker for chitosan to form a chitosan-silica complex membranes, which were applied to pervaporation dehydration of ethanol-water solutions. ST-GPE-S was obtained from reacting nanoscale silica particles with glycidyl phenyl ether, and subsequent sulfonation onto the attached phenyl groups. The chemical structure of the functionalized silica was characterized with FTIR, (1)H NMR, and energy-dispersive X-ray. Homogeneous di… Show more

“…Silica nanoparticles (SNP) with a size of 10-20 nm were purchased from Nissan Chemical Company. Sulfonated silica nanoparticles (SA-SNP) were obtained by sulfonation of SNP according to the reported method [35,36]. The sulfur content of SA-SNP was 1.82 wt% by elemental analysis, which corresponds to a sulfonic acid equivalent concentration of 0.5687 mol g −1 for SA-SNP.…”

“…The theoretical IEC value of SPAEEKK is about 1.30 mmol g −1 , and that of SA-SNP is approximately 0.58 mmol g −1 according to the literature [33,35]. The theoretical values of SPAEEKK nanocomposite membranes were calculated based on composition.…”

“…Sulfonation represents another method of SiO 2 NPs surface modification that has been used to produce chitosan-silica complex membranes (Liu et al, 2005). In the present study, sulfonation of SiO 2 NPs was used for the modification of the surface of SiO 2 NPs to study alternative methods of ionic immobilization of adenosine.…”

“…15 Silicon and metal oxides (eg, ZnO and TiO 2 ) are often used as nanofillers owing to their superior mechanical properties. 16 As the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the nanomaterial are superior to those of conventional biomaterials, they become a better choice for cardiovascular applications.…”
