Chitosan Nanoparticles Containing Lipoic Acid with Antioxidant Properties as a Potential Nutritional Supplement

Abstract: The addition of the antioxidant α-lipoic acid (ALA) to a balanced diet might be crucial for the prevention of comorbidities such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity. Due to its low half-life and instability under stomach-like conditions, α-lipoic acid was encapsulated into chitosan nanoparticles (Ch-NPs). The resulting chitosan nanoparticles containing 20% w/w ALA (Ch-ALA-NPs) with an average diameter of 44 nm demonstrated antioxidant activity and stability under stomach-like conditions for up to… Show more

“…Chitosan-based formulations have been used for the delivery of a variety of drugs, including antibiotics, anticancer agents, and growth factors [62,63]. Chitosan can be formulated into nanoparticles, microspheres, or hydrogels, which can control the release of drugs over a period of hours to weeks [64]. In the last few years, it has been widely used to obtain nanoparticles that have antioxidant properties [65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78].…”

“…To benefit from the affluence usefulness of manufacturing, great revenue at squat cost, and greater loading capability, the manufacturing procedure for nanoparticles such as chitosan NPs might be enhanced (Gallego et al, 2019;Kamel and El-Sayed, 2019). According to (Quester et al, 2022), chitosan-based nanoparticles comprising α-lipoic acid could pass the gastrointestinal barrier and emancipate their antioxidant consignment while remaining stable in stomach-like circumstances.…”
