Chitosan–Montmorillonite–Fe Nanocomposite Hydrogel for Phosphate Recovery and Reuse

Abstract: Phosphorous (P) recovery from wastewater is a promising solution to the depleting nonrenewable phosphate rocks as the raw material for fertilizer production and to the eutrophication caused by excessive nutrient contamination in surface waters. This work explored the potential of an electrolyte biohydrogel based on chitosan as a phosphate sorbent and controlled releaser to recover the nutrient from wastewater and then release it as a fertilizer to food plants. Sorption kinetics and isotherm were quantified in … Show more

“…For improved plant nutrition, synthetic phosphate substances such as ammonium phosphates are applied [ 18 ]. The long-term effect of ammonium phosphate is achieved via its encapsulation in the membranes of various substances [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. Among the new types of fertilisers are slow-release or controlled-release fertilisers [ 7 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ].…”
