Drug delivery encompasses a range of approaches, formulations, technologies, and systems designed to transport pharmaceutical compounds within the body, ensuring the safe and effective achievement of therapeutic effects. While often linked to a drug's chemical composition, it can also involve medical devices or combinations of drugs and devices. This concept is closely tied to dosage form and the chosen route of administration.These technologies and modes of administration play a crucial role in altering the drug release profile and influencing other pharmacokinetic and dynamic factors. The oral mucous membrane, known for its vascularity, high permeability, and accessibility, provides a means for the painless and steady systemic absorption of drugs. This approach bypasses the harsh stomach environment and initial liver metabolism. Buccal drug delivery, employing mucoadhesive polymers, has gained widespread application in this context.A variety of mucoadhesive devices, such as tablets, films, patches, disks, strips, ointments, and gels, have been recently developed. Among these, buccal patches stand out for their enhanced flexibility and comfort compared to other devices. This review sheds light on the novel drug delivery facilitated by mucoadhesive patches, delving into their historical evolution, manufacturing processes, properties, as well as examining the associated advantages and disadvantages.
