Chitosan-Based Coating Enriched with Hairy Fig (Ficus hirta Vahl.) Fruit Extract for “Newhall” Navel Orange Preservation

Abstract: A novel coating based on 1.5% chitosan (CH), enriched with or without hairy fig (Ficus hirta Vahl.) fruit extract (HFE), was applied to “Newhall” navel orange for improving the preservation effect. Changes in physicochemical indexes were analyzed over 120 days of cold storage. Uncoated fruit were used as the control. The CH-HFE coating, based on 1.5% CH enriched with HFE, exhibited the best preservation effect and showed the lowest decay rate (5.2%) and weight loss (5.16%). The CH-HFE coating could postpone th… Show more

“…Family Moraceae) can easily be identified due to their five-fingered leaves. Mature fruits resemble wild peaches and have been utilized as medicine and food for centuries [1,2]. They are widely distributed and commercially grown in southern China for meeting the food demands along with the treatment of constipation, inflammation, postpartum hypogalactia, tumors, and cancers [3][4][5][6].…”

“…There are hardly any scientific studies about the antioxidant and antifungal activities of hairy fig fruits (HFF). The HFF is a famous herbal medicine known in China by the name of 'Wú Zhǐ Máo Táo Guǒ', and has been used in both medicine and food for centuries by Hakka people [1,7,8].…”

“…Citrus fruits (Family Rutaceae, subfamily Aurantioideae) are highly susceptible to decay caused by more than 20 postharvest fungal infections leading, to approximately half the crop wasted due to fungal diseases [2]. Among various fungal strains, Penicillium fungi cause serious plant diseases and damage to the citrus crop during storage, accounting for about 10-30% [3]. The P. digitatum infects the citrus fruits, causes green mold disease, and generates huge (60-80%) yield losses under ambient conditions [4].…”

“…Chitosan was demonstrated to have good antibacterial and film‐forming effects. There are numerous publications on preservation using chitosan (Benhabiles et al, ; Chen, Cai, Chen, Peng, & Wan, ; Gao, Kan, Chen, et al, ; Gao, Kan, Wan, et al, ; Migliori, Salvati, Cesare, Lo Scalzo, & Parisi, ); however, there are only a few studies on preservation using CMC. Therefore, we decided to study the preservation properties of CMC.…”
