Chitosan‐alginate PEC membrane as a wound dressing: Assessment of incisional wound healing

Abstract: Flexible, thin, transparent, novel chitosan-alginate polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) membranes, cast from aqueous suspensions of chitosan-alginate coacervates with CaCl(2), were evaluated as potential wound-dressing materials. MTT and NR assays suggested that the chitosan-alginate PEC membranes and their aqueous extracts were nontoxic towards mouse and human fibroblast cells. Cell growth was also not hindered by co-incubation with the membranes. Compared to conventional gauze dressing, the PEC membranes caused a… Show more

“…To each stage, many formulations, including ointments, creams, films and dressings, have been developed. [9][10][11][12][13][14] Ointments containing minocycline, which exhibited controlled release, were reported recently because minocycline is highly effective against pressure ulcer bacteria. 15) Many formulations applied to pressure ulcers possess an antibacterial function 6,7,11,12,14,15) or potential to enhance the proliferation of granulation or epidermis.…”

“…Natural biopolymers, derived from naturally existent materials (e.g., chitin and chitosan from crustacean shells; cellulose from wood, etc. ), are renewable resources and possess better inherent biodegradability, biocompatibility, biofunctional motifs, and lower immunogenicity than synthetic polymers [104][105][106][107][108][109][110]. They have thus been widely used in many biomedical applications.…”
