Ultraviolet (UV) shielding materials have garnered widespread applications in biological protection, aerospace, intelligent coating, and other fields. However, they are vulnerable to external friction scratches due to prolonged exposure, which leads to a decline in their UV shielding ability, further limiting their long-term applications. In this work, a series of waterborne polyurethane−polydopamine nanocomposites with excellent self-healing and UV shielding properties were prepared, among which using waterborne polyurethane with Diels−Alder thermally reversible cross-linked networks as the substrate and polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles as the UV shielding agent. The developed nanocomposites can achieve a good self-healing effect at 120 °C in 30 min, and the self-healing efficiency can reach more than 68%. Adding PDA nanoparticles can enhance the mechanical and UV shielding properties of the nanocomposite. The nanocomposite with 0.5 wt % PDA contents has both the highest tensile strength and elongation at break, with values of 9.9 MPa and 667.27%, respectively. UV−vis tests exhibit that the residual amount of methylene blue solution under the protection of the nanocomposite film containing 2 wt % PDA content could reach 63.81%, concluding that the as-prepared nanomaterials have excellent UV shielding properties. This study offers an idea for the production of excellent and durable UV shielding materials with self-healing properties.

Synthesis and Characterization of Biopolyol-Based Waterborne Polyurethane Modified through Complexation with Chitosan

In this study, a series of castor oil-based anionic waterborne polyurethane (CWPU) systems, which it has been suggested may be suitable for use as green elastomers with diverse applications in films and coatings, was prepared by modified with O-carboxymethyl chitosan (CS) as not only a reinforcing filler, but a chain-extender of polyurethane prepolymer to enhance the properties of polyurethanes. Moreover, not only was the system obtained with castor oil-based polyol in the absence of a catalyst, but it was maintained with low viscosity by using acetone instead of toxic methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) during the synthesis process. The sizes, zeta potential, chemical formation, and morphology of the CWPU-CS composites had been investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the results show that the modification allows to enhance storage/loss modulus, tensile properties, thermal stability at high temperature, and biocompatibility of CWPU and CWPU/CS nanocomposites according to various contents of CS.

Preparation and Properties of Self-Healing Waterborne Polyurethane Based on Dynamic Disulfide Bond

A self-healing waterborne polyurethane (WPU) materials containing dynamic disulfide (SS) bond was prepared by introducing SS bond into polymer materials. The zeta potential revealed that all the synthesized WPU emulsions displayed excellent stability, and the particle size of them was about 100 nm. The characteristic peaks of N-H and S-S in urethane were verified by FTIR, and the chemical environment of all elements were confirmed by the XPS test. Furthermore, the tensile strength, self-healing process and self-healing efficiency of the materials were quantitatively evaluated by tensile measurements. The results showed that the self-healing efficiency could reach 96.14% when the sample was heat treated at 70 °C for 4 h. In addition, the material also showed a good reprocessing performance, and the tensile strength of the reprocessed film was 3.39 MPa.
