Chitin–glucan, a natural cell scaffold for skin moisturization and rejuvenation

Abstract: Two clinical studies were conducted to evaluate the tolerance and effects of a copolymer of chitin and beta-glucan, forming the exoskeleton of fungal cell walls, now supplied for cosmetic applications. A 6-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted on 13 volunteers with sensitive skin to compare with 0.5-2% formulations chitin-glucan applied twice daily. Biometrological evaluations showed that erythema did not develop, the water retention capacity of the stratum corneum increased and… Show more

“…Chitin-glucan is a copolymer found in the cell wall of several mushrooms with good moisturizing properties, can help fight against some of the signs of skin aging, and has potential for use in skin moisturizing and anti-aging formulations [35]. Tremella extracts make an exotic addition to comprehensive skin care products which are applicable in treatment of neurodermatitis and sclerodermatitis [36].…”

“…Chitin is long-chain polysaccharides consisting of -(1-4)-linked N-acetyl anhydroglucosamine units, and has the potential for use in medical supplies, cosmetics, and food [1][2][3] owing to high biocompatibility [4,5]. Chitin is classified -chitin or -chitin, depending on its crystalline structure.…”

“…Chitin-glucan has good moisturizing properties and can help fight against some of the signs of skin aging and has potential for use in skin moisturizing and anti-aging formulations. KitoZyme's chitin-glucan ingredient is extracted from the mycelium of Aspergillus niger, which grows in the by-products of the production of pharmaceutical and food-grade citric acid (Gautier et al 2008). The ingredient is presently used in KiOsmetine-CG.…”
