Chitin based polyurethanes using hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene, part III: Surface characteristics

Abstract: Hydroxy terminated polybutadiene (HTPB)-chitin based polyurethanes (PUs) with controlled hydrophobicity were synthesized using HTPB and toluene diisocyanate (TDI). The prepolymer was extended with different mass ratios of chitin and 1,4-butane diol (BDO). The effect of chitin contents in chain extender (CE) proportions on surface properties was studied and investigated. Incorporation of chitin contents into the final PU showed decrease in contact angle value of water drop, water absorption (%) and swelling beh… Show more

“…[8] The significant features of PU elastomers has been noted in various designed products to reveal impeccable properties and robust polymers with high possibility of recycling by simple process like extrusion and injection casting. [9,10] As such petroleum sources are renowned to form variety of polyols ventured to obtain precast PU, yet high energy demands and environmental effects occurred to seek for alternatives. In recent time, economically substantial and research interest arisen in renewable feedstock such as vegetable oils.…”

“…The importance of PU elastomers is increasing because of their broad range of properties and increasing number of applications [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. The macromolecules of PUEs are composed of relatively long, flexible segments (SSs) and short, rigid segments (HSs), with alternating polydisperse blocks.…”
