Chiropractic manipulation: Reasons for concern?

Abstract: Chiropractic's popularity is rising among the general population. Moreover, few studies have been conducted to properly evaluate its safety. We report three cases of serious neurological adverse events in patients treated with chiropractic manipulation. The first case is a 41 years old woman who developed a vertebro-basilar stroke 48 h after cervical manipulation. The second case represents a 68 years old woman who presented a neuropraxic injury of both radial nerves after three sessions of spinal manipulation… Show more

“…19 Many reports have described epidural hematomas occurring in various parts of the spine following spinal manipulation therapy. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] However, the literature lacks reports of spinal intradural hematomas following spinal manipulation therapy. We present here a unique case of a compressive thoracic intradural hematoma in the setting of a hemorrhagic conversion of a thoracic schwannoma after spinal manipulation therapy.…”

“…11 • Chiropractic is an intervention which focuses on spinal manipulation therapy, often marketed as a panacea, but numerous serious adverse effects have been reported as a result of chiropractic manipulation, including stroke, neuropraxic injury, epidural hematoma, paraplegia, and fatal posterior circulation cerebrovascular accident. [12][13][14][15] • Acupuncture is a component of some TCM and involves puncturing a patient's skin with needles along so-called meridian lines to achieve therapeutic effect. Numerous systematic reviews, multi-centre trials, and prospective studies have highlighted the dangers of acupuncture, finding that it can cause pneumothorax, hepatitis C, septicemia, endocarditis, local skin infection, perichondritis, arthritis, osteomyelitis, and many less serious side effects such as hematoma, slight hemorrhage, and dizziness.…”
