“…Water mites (Hydracarina), oligochaetes, beetles and, especially, dipterans (chironomids, ceratopogonids and tipulids) are often dominant pioneer taxa after rewetting of streams (Stanley et al, 1994;Paltridge et al, 1997;Uys and O'Keeffe, 1997;Lake, 2003;Acuna et al, 2005;Stubbington et al, 2009;Clarke et al, 2010). Chironomids are especially adept at inhabiting stream systems with extreme hydrological variability and habitat disturbance (Aguiar et al, 2002;Wood et al, 2005), and as noted here and elsewhere (Casas, 2008;Clarke et al, 2010), the subfamily Orthocladiinae appears extremely adept at reaching dominance initially after stream rewetting, but its importance quickly declines as the wet season progresses.…”
