Chiridota heheva, new species, from Western Atlantic deep-sea cold seeps and anthropogenic habitats (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea: Apodida)

Abstract: Chiridota heheva new species is described from cold seeps off Georgia and Florida, a shipwreck off Georgia, and an artificial wood-block habitat near Puerto Rico, in bathyal-abyssal depths of 2,200 3,300 meters. C. heheva is similar in some respects to C. hydrothermica Smirnov & Gebruk from Western and Southeastern Pacific hydrothermal vents, but it differs in structure of the tentacles and in color.

“…The chemosynthetic assemblages of the REGAB site share many genera and even species with other cold-seep sites in the Atlantic. The alvinocarid shrimp Alvinocaris muricola has been collected in the Gulf of Mexico (Carney, 1994;Cordes et al, 2007), Blake Ridge (Van Dover et al 2003) and Barbados seep aggregations (Olu et al, 1996), and the chirodotid holothurian Chiridota heveva, which seems to be very close to the REGAB species, was first described from the Blake Ridge mussel beds (Pawson and Vance, 2004). The gastropod Provanna sculpta is abundant within Gulf of Mexico mussel beds (Bergquist et al, 2005) and tube-worm aggregations (Bergquist et al, 2003).…”

“…With a few notable exceptions, such as apodous holothurians (Smirnov et al 2000, Pawson and Vance 2004 and sea stars (MacAvoy et al 2002(MacAvoy et al , 2005, echinoderms seldom exploit cold seeps and their closely associated biota as food sources (Carney 2010). Of the 52 images of echinoids and holothurians forming the basis of the present study, only two showed echinoids, both of them Gracilechinus alexandri (Danielssen and Koren, 1882) (Fig.…”
