Chiral Metamaterials With Negative Refractive Index Composed by an Eight-Cranks Molecule

Abstract: A chiral medium constituted by a two-dimensional lattice of eight cranks of the same handedness is studied and found that it exhibits a huge electromagnetic activity, circular dichroism, and negative refraction index. Using a free-wave experimental setup and numerical simulations, the transmission and reflection coefficients for a thin slab of such metamaterials were determined, and the effective values for the refractive index, electric permittivity, magnetic permeability, and chirality parameter were calcula… Show more

“…If we define the ellipticity as the angle 2η whose tangent is the minor to major amplitude ratio of the polarization ellipse, then a plane wave, linearly Figure 1: Geometry of the bilayered chiral structure under study. It is composed of two layers: the top layer is similar to the ones studied in [1,9] and the second layer is the specular image of the first one. 3D view (a) and front view (b) of the structure.…”

“…The characterization method assumes linearly polarized incident waves, normal incidence and requires the determination of the co-polar and cross-polar transmission coefficients, tCo and tCross and co-polar reflection coefficients, rCo. The transmission ( ±± = ∓ · ) and reflection (r=rCo) coefficients for RHCP and LHCP are obtained by making use of the Jones Matrix notation [19]. The first subindex in t++ represents the handedness of the transmitted wave, while the second one represents the handedness of the incident wave.…”

“…Metamaterials, i.e., artificial effective media with supernatural properties, provide diverse unique optical properties such as negative permeability, or permittivity, negative refractive index, optical chirality, or unusual high‐index . Those unique optical properties facilitate new optical systems such as multifunctional optical filter, phase modulator, gradient index lens, perfect/super lens, and optical clocking supported by transformation optics or even active optical devices so called “meta‐devices”.…”
