Chiral Cyclobutane β-Amino Acid-Based Amphiphiles: Influence of Cis/Trans Stereochemistry on Solution Self-Aggregation and Recognition

Abstract: Novel diastereomeric anionic amphiphiles based on the rigid cyclobutane β-amino acid scaffold have been synthesized and deeply investigated with the aim of generating new functional supramolecular architectures on the basis of the rational design of original amphiphilic molecules and the control of their self-assembly. The main interest has been focused on the effect that cis/trans stereochemistry exerts on their molecular organization and recognition. In diluted solutions, the relative stereochemistry mainly … Show more

“…Surface tension was obtained from fitting the drop profile to the appropriate Young-Laplace equations. See Sorrenti et al [49] for more details. From a concentrated clear solution, successive dilutions were made to cover the adequate range of surface tension changes.…”

“…The droplet contour is taken at the point of maximum intensity slope. This contour is fitted to the Laplace -Young equation [10] using a Golden Section Search Algorithm that has the centre coordinates, an angular correction for the vertical alignment, the radius of the droplet and the interfacial tension as parameters.…”

“…Moreover, they form heteroaggregates with bilirubin at submicellar concentrations but with a different expression of supramolecular chirality. 15 Concerning diastereoisomeric nonionic amphiphiles 2, a strong influence of the cis/trans stereochemistry on the physicochemical behavior, molecular organization, and morphology of their Langmuir monolayers and dry solid states was observed. 16 Overall, these differential features make cyclobutane-containing amphiphiles promising building blocks for the design of new soft materials with predictable and tunable properties.…”
