Chiral calix[4]arenes bearing amino alcohol functionality as membrane carriers for transport of chiral amino acid methylesters and mandelic acid

Abstract: Novel chiral calix[4]arene derivatives bearing amino alcohol moieties at the lower rim have been synthesized from the reaction of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene diester with various amino alcohols. The transport of amino acid esters (phenylglycine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan methyl esters hydrochloride) and mandelic acid were studied through chloroform bulk liquid membrane system using chiral calix[4]arenes 15-20. All these receptors have been found to act as carriers for transport of aromatic amino acid methyle… Show more

“…Thus, we expected that chiral thiacalixarenes might provide another type of chiral selectors for silica colloidal membranes. Indeed, calixarene derivatives, the lower rims of which have been functionalized with chiral moieties, such as tartaric ester,22 aminonaphthol units,48 and others,4952 have been used for chiral recognition 53. The rigidity of the microenvironment of the cavity and the nature of the chiral substituents were critical for enantiomeric recognition 19…”

“…Bozkurt et al . developed several Calix arene molecules with amino alcohol functionalities that showed promising selectivities up to 3.3 for different chiral amino methylesters when used in a BLM. The complexity of the synthesis though, hampers a larger scale practical use of these molecules.…”
