Chiral Bis(12-crown-4)-based Electrodes for Sodium Ion

Abstract: New optically active bis(12-crown-4) based electrodes for Na+ were evaluated. The best selectivity (log k = −2.3) was obtained when the sensors were used in association with NPOE as a plasticizing solvent mediator and NaHFPB as an anion excluder in PVC matrices. Na+ selectivity against K+ was augmented by a factor of nearly two using R,R- or S,S- bis(12-crown-4) compared with that of optically inactive bis(12-crown-4)s reported previously.

“…However, it should be noted here that the chirality of some receptor molecules may also have appreciable effect on the selectivity towards various biologically important metal ions. [54][55][56][57][58] This effect can be welldemonstrated as the stereostructure of chiral natural ionophores such as valinomycin, monensin, lasalocid, monactin, dinactin, salinomycin, narasin and nigericin plays an important role in the selective transport of metal cations through biomembranes. 57,58 Herein we report the synthesis of four new achiral and four new chiral monoazacrown ethers in which an acridinone or an Nmethylacridinone fluorescent signalling unit was attached through a methylene bridge to the nitrogen of the macrocycles.…”

“…The mixture was thoroughly stirred to mix completely. 19 The solution for the K + ISM was prepared using 6.25 mg (2.5 wt%) of ligand (valinomycin), 1.0 mg (0.4 wt%) of lipophilic additive (KTpClPB), 159.5 mg (63.8 wt%) of plasticizer (DOS), and 83.25 mg (33.3 wt%) of PVC. 20 The components were dissolved in 2.5 mL of THF.…”

“…The ( R , R )- or ( S , S )-isomer of a bis-chiral crown ether has been reported to bind selectively sodium against potassium due to the optimized size of the binding pocket, while its optically inactive ( R , S )-isomer does not show such selectivity [44].…”
