Chip-Interleaved Multiple Access for Underwater Acoustic Communication and Its Performance Evaluation in Propagation Simulation

Abstract: In this paper, we review a chip-interleaved multiple-access (CIMA) method for underwater acoustic communication. CIMA is commonly used for wireless radio communication, but it is rarely applied to underwater communication. We evaluated whether this CIMA method is applicable to underwater acoustic communication. We also evaluated the performance of the communication method in which a multipath profile is measured in real time by applying the CIMA method, and evaluated its performance in a simulation. The obtain… Show more

“…By applying scheme (i), the output SNR (OSNR), which is defined as eq. (10) T , varies from À0:0025 to 0.0025 every 0.0002. The dotted lines show OSNRs when communication is carried out without scheme (i).…”

“…1) In many previous studies of UWA communication systems that are robust with respect to ISI, [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] the application of orthogonal signal division multiplexing (OSDM) has been proposed by the authors. 10,11) OSDM is a signal multiplexing scheme that enables communication by measuring the channel profile in real time. [12][13][14] Because OSDM can measure the channel profile directly, different from existing UWA communication with a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) that estimates the channel profile, UWA communication with OSDM has been confirmed to be robust with respect to heavy ISI compared with existing UWA communication with DFE using a least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm.…”

“…1,2) Acoustic data communication has been used mainly in underwater acoustic communication because acoustic wave in underwater can propagate longer distance than electromagnetic wave. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] On the other hand, acoustic data communication for short-range in air has not been well researched except for use of indoor positioning (acoustic beacon). 10,11) In addition, near field acoustic communication method has not well been researched nor used.…”

“…18,19) As an alternative, the application of orthogonal signal division multiplexing (OSDM) has been proposed by the author. [20][21][22][23] OSDM has been proposed for use in mobile wireless communication to achieve reliable channel sensing. [24][25][26] OSDM multiplexes several data vectors -a pilot signal as well as messages -into a single data stream.…”
