Chinese Medicine Combined With EGFR-TKIs Prolongs Progression-Free Survival and Overall Survival of Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Patients Harboring EGFR Mutations, Compared With the Use of TKIs Alone

Abstract: Objective: To explore the efficacy comparison between epidermal growth factor receptor–tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) combined with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and single EGFR-TKIs for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods: A total of 91 NSCLC patients with EGFR mutation were divided into an experimental group and a control group (in a ratio of 2:1) to receive TCM and EGFR-TKIs (61 cases) or single EGFR-TKIs (30 cases). Patients in the control group took EGFR-TKIs and those in the … Show more

“…Lung cancer is a malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality rates in the world today. 1 At present, with the increasing environmental pollution, the incidence of lung cancer is increasing year by year. 2 Surgical intervention is the preferred treatment for most patients at present, but anesthesia and surgical trauma often cause stress responses in patients.…”

“…After radiotherapy, patients with mild symptoms will experience fatigue, loss of appetite, and emotional uncertainty; some patients who have received radiotherapy for a long period will experience skin damage, esophageal damage, and lung damage, and in severe cases, they will experience radiation pneumonitis, radiation esophagitis, and bone marrow suppression, etc. ( 65 ). Incorporating Chinese medicine as an adjunct to radiotherapy can effectively mitigate the toxic side effects experienced by patients following radiotherapy.…”

“…The incidence of grade 3-4 serious side effects, such as rash, diarrhea, liver damage, oral ulcers, and paronychia, was reduced by 15.19% (26.67% vs. 11.48%). Chinese medicine combined with EGFR-TKIs has a tendency to enhance efficacy, prolong survival and reduce drug side effects (Wang et al, 2021b).…”
