Chinese Herbal Medicine, Alternative or Complementary, for Endometriosis-Associated Pain: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Current medical treatments for endometriosis-associated pain (EAP) have limitations, including symptom recurrence and hormonal side effects. For this reason, it is important to elucidate any alternative or complementary treatments available, while Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) shows potential to be this treatment. This study aims to provide evidence for the efficacy and safety of CHM for EAP. Randomized control trials comparing CHM to other treatments for EAP in women with endometriosis were considered eligibl… Show more

“…For instance, studies have shown CHM’s ability to induce apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells through multiple signaling pathways ( Wang et al, 2024 ), ameliorate perimenopausal syndrome by regulating hormones secreted by the ovaries ( Xue et al, 2022 ), and exhibit potential therapeutic effects on pregnancy-related diseases, such as recurrent spontaneous abortion, pre-eclampsia, and gestational diabetes ( Fang et al, 2023 ). Furthermore, a meta-analysis demonstrated that CHM significantly alleviates pain associated with endometriosis with fewer side effects compared to conventional therapies ( Lin et al, 2023 ). These findings affirm the applicability of CHM in treating gynecological diseases and provide a scientific basis for its integration into the modern medical system.…”
