Chinese development assistance and household welfare in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: By combing geocoded project-level data on Chinese development assistance with geocoded household-level data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), we investigate the effect of Chinese project assistance on household welfare in 13 sub-Saharan African countries. We exploit the geographic proximity of household clusters across two different DHS survey waves (before and after the influx of Chinese aid) and use a difference-indifference design in order to investigate the impact of Chinese aid on households' … Show more

“…Some studies reported that having at least one child can affect a household's food security ( 33 – 37 ). About 28% of households who have at least one child faced very low food security, which shows the importance of the attention to these households in food aid programs by policymakers and governmental institutions ( 38 , 39 ). About two-thirds of children of the participating households (about 67%) faced low and very low food security.…”

“…However, location coordinates of each cluster can be used to generate an artificial panel based on clusters' proximity. To do so, we follow Martorano et al 58 The strategy consists in matching clusters from different survey rounds (ie, 2008 and 2014) that share latitude and longitude coordinates up to the first decimal unit (or an area of approximately 50 km in radius). A total of 616 artificial areas were obtained through this method.…”

“…Furthermore, if we expand our perspective beyond the one woman to all of the world's extreme poor, then cash transfers likely become too expensive to be a sustainable answer for singlehandedly ending global poverty. 5 (Relatedly, Hanna and Olken in this symposium discuss the tax implications of implementing a universal basic income program versus a cheaper targeted transfer program. )…”

“… Martinez (2014, 2018) find similar mid-term evidence from Uganda's Youth Opportunity Program, but that in the longer run (nine years) the control and treatment groups converge in employment, earnings, and consumption 5. Asset transfer programs, or "ultra-poor graduation" programs, get closer to filling the broad set of needs necessary for a permanent escape from poverty, and have been shown to have very significant positive impacts on household income (BRAC 2013;Banerjee, Duflo, Chattopadhyay, and Shapiro 2016; Bandiera et al 2017).…”
