This paper contributes to empirical research of intra-industry trade, especially vertical intraindustry trade (VIIT), by two aspects. Firstly, we separate VIIT into higher-export-price VIIT and lower-export-price VIIT. Secondly, we give attention to R&D and FDI stock in explaining VIIT determinants. Applied to panel data representing South Korea's bilateral trade with 15 OECD countries and Taiwan from 1996 through 2003, this alternative makes an intricate understanding of the VIIT determinants possible. Main empirical findings are that South Korea's R&D investments focus on price competitiveness while its inward FDI seeks efficiency and its outward FDI seeks a market in this period.

A common feature in the empirical literature of intra-industry trade is the analysis of trade between a given reference country and a set of partners. This article differs from previous studies by examining the bilateral trade among all trading partners within a set of partners. Using a panel data approach, we find that differences in factor endowments seem not to be important as a driving force behind vertical intra-industry trade for European countries over the chosen period. More important driving forces are production size, geographical proximity, average income per capita and income distribution overlap.

This paper tests a neo-Heckscher-Ohlin versus a neo-Ricardian framework for explaining vertical intra-industry trade. The study applies panel techniques with instrument variables to analyse trade between ‘old’ EU and 10 Central-East European countries in their post-transition period. Results show country-pair fixed effects to be of high relevance for explaining vertical intra-industry trade. Technology differences are positively, while differences in factor endowment, measured in GDP per capita, are negatively correlated with vertical intra-industry trade, and confirm the relevance of the neo-Ricardian approach. In addition, changing bilateral differences in personal income distribution during the transition of Central-East European countries towards a market economy contribute to changes in vertical intra-industry trade.
