China’s sponge cities alleviate urban flooding and water shortage: a review

Abstract: About one tenth of humans are impacted by water shortages around the globe. Water resilience is worsening under climate change because intensifying weather extremes induce more severe and increasingly frequent droughts and floods. In particular, China, as the world's most populous nation, has battled with persisting water shortages and devastating floods for decades. As a consequence, Chinese scholars have designed the sponge city concept in the early 2010s to relieve cities from the growing pressure of water … Show more

“…The risk of flooding in cities is rapidly increasing with climate deterioration and rapid urbanization [3][4][5][6]. Urban flooding has become a prominent problem in many countries and regions [7][8][9][10]. For example, China's urban flooding disaster in 2021 caused 59.01 million people to be affected [11].…”

“…To effectively address this challenge, some scholars have conducted in-depth research on measures to mitigate waterlogging disasters. Firstly, sponge cities represent an important engineering measure of reducing urban waterlogging disasters [8][9][10][11]. Facilities associated with sponge city construction perform functions such as infiltration, retention, storage, and purification.…”

“…China is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world, and water resource shortages will seriously hinder the sustainable development of the country [9]. In order to solve the problem of water resource shortages and improve water resource utilization efficiency, the Chinese government has adopted a series of water-saving policies and measures, including investing in water conservancy facilities and implementing water-saving technology reforms in different sectors [10].…”
