The digitalization process of China's manufacturing industry has entered a critical period, and the real economy is also in an important period of high-quality development. Promoting the organic integration of manufacturing industry and digital economy to achieve high-quality development is a key and difficult problem to be solved. This paper examines the impact of digital economy on the high-quality development of manufacturing industry, the action mechanism and possible regional heterogeneity of the influence based on a panel dataset of 31 Chinese provinces and cities. The results show that digital economy can significantly promote the high-quality development of manufacturing industry, technological innovation and management efficiency have played positive intermediary roles in the relationship, furthermore,the technological innovation has a greater intermediary effect. There is regional heterogeneity about this impact, for example, the promotion effect in the eastern, western and southern regions is more significant than that in the center and north. At the time when China’s economic growth is transforming the old and new kinetic energy, more attention should be paid to the construction of infrastructure related to the development of digital economy, to promote the development of digital economy according to local conditions, to cultivate innovation platforms, to strengthen the training of digital technology talents, to promote digital industrialization and industrial digitalization, and to achieve high‐quality development of the manufacturing industry.

The purpose of the paper is to determine the causal relationship between financial and investment indicators and the level of innovation development in GII leading countries and Ukraine. For a sample of 10 leaders in GII-2022 and Ukraine for 2011–2020, a correlation analysis was conducted based on the following indicators: the value of GII, foreign direct investment (net inflows), domestic credit to the private sector, ease of getting credit, protecting minority investors, and real interest rate. A positive relationship (with moderate/high strength) between innovation development and foreign direct investment has been proven in 7 out of 11 countries with a time lag of 0-2 years; domestic credit to the private sector – in 6 countries (lag of 0-3 years); and protecting minority investors – in 9 countries (lag of 0-2 years). For other indicators, the relationship is negative. Through VAR-modelling and Granger test, it is proven that the change in the value of foreign direct investment causes the change in the value of GII in 6 countries (bidirectional causality exists only in Ukraine); domestic credit to the private sector – in 6 countries, protecting minority investors and real interest rate – in 2 countries, and ease of getting credit – only in Switzerland. The results show that foreign direct investment and domestic credit to the private sector are the reasons for increasing the level of innovation development and have potentially the highest influence. In Ukraine, compared to GII leaders, only the factor of foreign direct investment is identified as a cause of innovation development.

Spatial Imbalance, Dynamic Evolution and Convergence of the Digital Economy: Analysis Based on Panel Data of 278 Cities in China

Accelerating the development of the digital economy is the way to build a modern industrial system and promote sustainable development. In order to accurately analyze the development status of China’s digital economy, this study introduced a text analysis method to construct an index of the digital economy and surveyed the digital economy based on the panel data of 278 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2019. Moran’s I index, the Dagum Gini coefficient, the kernel density and a Markov chain were used to reveal the space-time difference and dynamic change characteristics. Considering the impact of the spatial correlation and regional division on convergence, we compared the σ values and spatial σ values to study the convergence characteristics after grouping with the decision tree method. The research showed that the digital economy had greatly improved, but it showed a significant imbalance. The research on the regional division of cities according to their geographical distribution and grade showed that the development status of the digital economy was increasingly different, and there was no convergence feature. We chose continuous classification variables and used the decision tree method to divide cities into 10 groups to investigate the convergence. The results showed that the σ values and spatial σ values decreased significantly and showed convergence characteristics. The development of the digital economy showed convergence, indicating that the convergence was greatly affected by the geographical location and grouping basis. Overall, this study contributes to our understanding of the development status of the digital economy, and targeted policy recommendations were proposed to improve the level of digital economy development.
