Children's Responses to Sensory Stimuli and their Behavior in the Dental Office

Abstract: Children's behavior during dental examinations is known to be affected by many factors, including age, previous experiences, anxiety and fear and others. This investigation demonstrates that it is also associated with their reactions to various sensory stimuli.

“…However, less attention has been paid to the relationship between DFA and other person factors such as general anxiety/fear and over-responsivity to sensory stimuli. Similar to DFA, general anxiety/fear and sensory over-responsivity (SOR) have been linked to negative oral health behaviors and outcomes in typical and clinical populations (e.g., [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ]). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to synthesize the current literature in order to present a conceptual model of DFA, other person factors which have the potential to be targeted in future interventions (e.g., general anxiety/fear and sensory over-responsivity), and their associations with each other and oral health behaviors and outcomes.…”

“…We teach patient, clinician and assistant positioning, and learn how to use equipment, materials and prosthetics within the oral cavity, yet typically the sensory, cognitive, affective and motor integration that is needed to touch a patient with dignity is never part of the formal curriculum, and we suspect that this is one of the little spoken of aspects of dental education that students are just expected to pick‐up tacitly. The lack of attention is also mirrored in the literature, which typically refers to touch when talking about management of anxious patients . Clearly, our society values dentists who are “gentle,” but the complexities involved in learning how to touch and handle patients with dignity and care has not been researched in dentistry.…”

The ways that students learn touch presents an interesting area for future research.…”
