Children of Diabetic Mothers Electrocardiographic Studies in the Newborn

Abstract: Summary In the belief that the adrenal hyperplasia often seen in the children of diabetic mothers is associated with hyperfunction of the adrenal glands and that it may disturb the electrolyte balance and thereby also disturbs cardiac function, 15 children of diabetic mothers were examined. The investigation included an analysis of serial electrocardiograms traced in the neonatal period. In 4 cases the serum potassium was also determined. Abnormal electrocardiograms were seen in 11 cases. The electrocardiograp… Show more

“…The observation of a relationship between heart volume and measures of cardiac function as assessed by ECG and the measure of cardiac stroke volume could indicate that "cardiomegaly" in this group of infants was of adaptive type. ECG abnormalities usually disappearing within the first 5 days have been reported in IDMs (17). In larger series of IDMs, however, Gellis & Hsia (18) found no ECG abnormalities.…”

“…According to Bjorklund (1953) the serum potassium of babies born to diabetic women is low, and he found 'suppression or sagging' of the S-T segment, pathological negative T and U waves and prolongation of the QT interval on their electrocardiograms, but no such changes in a control group. They existed whether the baby showed clinical disturbance or not, but in no abnormal baby was the E.C.G.…”
