Childhood maltreatment and psychotic experiences: Exploring the specificity of early maladaptive schemas

Abstract: Results indicated specificity effects in that specific types of maltreatment are associated with specific maladaptive schemas. From a practitioner's perspective, these findings offer credence to cognitive theories of psychopathology, and support the validity of EMS identification and modification among clients with psychotic symptomology both as a fundamental component of traditional CBT and within specialized schema-focused therapy.

“…In total, 53% of analyses overall showed evidence of mediation in this category. In terms of papers, 17/22 were supportive of mediation (Appiah-Kusi et al, 2017;Ashford et al, 2012;Bortolon et al, 2017;Boyda et al, 2018;Evans et al, 2015;Fisher et al, 2013;Gawęda et al, 2019;Gibson et al, 2019;Hardy et al, 2016;Jaya et al, 2017;McDonnell et al, 2018;Mętel et al, 2020;Murphy et al, 2015;Peach et al, 2019;Pinto-Gouveia et al, 2014;van Nierop et al, 2014;Wickham & Bentall, 2016), 5/20 were not (Fisher et al, 2012;Morgan et al, 2014;Perona-Garcelán et al, 2014;Weijers et al, 2018;Yamasaki et al, 2016). “…In recent years the relationship between childhood trauma and/or neglect and clinical psychosis has become wellestablished (Croft et al, 2019;Kelleher et al, 2013;Mørkved et al, 2017;van Dam, van Nierop, Viechtbauer, Velthorst, & van Winkel, 2015;van Nierop et al, 2014;Varese et al, 2012). Similar, but weaker, relationships have been observed for subclinical psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) within both community and nonpsychotic clinical samples (Berry, Band, Corcoran, Barrowclough, & Wearden, 2007a;Berry, Wearden, Barrowclough, & Liversidge, 2006;Boyda, McFeeters, Dhingra, & Rhoden, 2018;Nolan et al, 2018). Currently, attachment theory (Bowlby, 1988) features heavily in theoretical models of psychosis, researchers having sought to relate this condition to childhood adversity as well as to childhood and adult attachment styles (Berry & Bucci, 2016;Cole, Strauss, Fife-Schaw, & McCarthy-Jones, 2017;Gumley, Taylor, Schwannauer, & MacBeth, 2014;Harder, 2014;Read & Gumley, 2008).…”

“…Specifically, if a child is parented through loving and secure relationships (Bowlby, 1988), she or he will likely develop a secure sense of self along with a secure adult attachment style, the latter being associated with longer-lasting and better quality relationships (Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991;Berry, Barrowclough, & Wearden, 2007b;Givertz, Woszidlo, Segrin, & Knutson, 2013). Parenting that is uncaring or controlling may give rise to an insecure sense of self along with an insecure adult attachment style, such as the anxious and avoidant types associated with negative conceptions of self and others (Berry et al, 2007a;Bowlby, 1988;Boyda et al, 2018;Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998;Wearden, Peters, Berry, Barrowclough, & Liversidge, 2008).…”

“…53% of analyses overall showed evidence of mediation in this category. In terms of papers, 15/20 were supportive of mediation 33,35,37,38,54,55,57,60,62,64,69,71,76,86,87 , 5/20 were not 34,59,70,78,88 . Results were more likely to show evidence of mediation when conducted in the general population, compared with clinical samples (65% versus 38% of analyses were supportive of mediation respectively, see Table 1).…”
