Childhood Hodgkin's disease in Uganda.A ten year experience

Abstract: Between 1967 and 1977, 48 patients with Hodgkin's disease under 16-years-old were treated with MOPP chemotherapy alone at the Uganda Cancer Institute because radiotherapy facilities are not available. Thirty-eight percent had early stage disease (stages I-IIIA). Prolonged first remissions were achieved in 74% of 42 complete responders. Of 11 patients who relapsed , 5 had prolonged second remissions induced by MOPP. Three patients were lost to follow-up and 15 of the remaining 45 died: 12 of these from progress… Show more

“…The risk of secondary mass development increases in the years after the diagnosis and the latent period is over 20 years. The incidence especially of breast, thyroid, and skin cancers in childhood, and of gastrointestinal tumors and lung cancers in the adult period, are higher in children who are diagnosed with HL during childhood and survive (32)(33)(34)(35)(36). Reduced-dose involved field radiotherapy has been used in recent years because of the late side effects of radiotherapy.…”

“…This rate is significantly higher than that obtained by the Senegalese who, over a period of 11 years, treated seven patients, with six deaths and one lost to follow-up. Our result is comparable to that obtained by Olweny in Uganda who used virtually the same protocol as us (75% for stages I-IIA and 60% for stages IIIB and IV), but our sample is much smaller [9].…”

“…The mixed cellularity type is also more commonly seen in developing countries. [5][6][7][8][9] Very little has been published about the clinical behavior of the disease in the very young (i.e., those under 6 years of age). In fact, there appears to be no report dealing specifically with pre-school children considered as a separate group.…”
