Childhood adverse events and BDNF promoter methylation in later-life

Abstract: Studies have shown that the effects of early-life stress and trauma can be enduring, with long-term negative effects on health. Epigenetics, including DNA methylation, have been implicated as a potential mechanism for these effects. “…In the case of early-life stress, the level of BDNF DNA M in rats increased in response to early-life adversity, and this increase persisted into adulthood (Zhou et al, 2023). The current study finding of the association of BDNF DNA M with HCC supplements the previous findings (Unternaehrer et al, 2012;Zhou et al, 2023) by demonstrating that the level of BDNF DNA M in young adults increased in accordance with the HPA axis activity on a long-term basis.
