Childbirth Education for Multiple Pregnancy

Abstract: Women with a multiple pregnancy can expect a different labor and birth course than those with a singleton pregnancy. While the postpartum period is similar to that of families with a singleton, it is likely to be more hectic in families with multiple infants. In addition, a multiple pregnancy increases both maternal and neonatal risks; therefore, women with a multiple pregnancy may experience slight differences in care due to these potential risks, including additional monitoring and treatment. This article di… Show more

“…In terms of fetal outcomes, moderately elevated blood pressure in multiple pregnancies increases blood flow to the placenta, contributing to decreased risk of preterm birth and low birth weight ( 43 ). Multiple pregnancies have other risks, the major one being prematurity, which is associated with adverse outcomes such as respiratory morbidity, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, and metabolic disorders ( 23 , 44 ). However, the risk of future cardiovascular disease is not increased ( 45 ), which contrasts with single pregnancies, where HDP is a risk factor for future cardiovascular disease ( 23 , 46 , 47 ).…”

“…Women of African descent are the most likely to have multiple pregnancies, with West African women having the highest rate of 48 in a thousand births (Lyons, 2000). Obesity and iron deficiency in multiple pregnancies could result from an exaggerated physiologic response due to increased placental and fetal mass, and increased blood volume (Montgomery et al, 2005). Anemia has been reported in multiple pregnancies than in singleton pregnancies (Harvey, 1999).…”

“…It is well established that twin pregnancies involve more risks during pregnancy and delivery than singleton pregnancies. This elevated risk can be attributed not only to the high number of premature births and/or growth restriction but also to delivery complications among term pregnancies, though the latter cause has declined (Montgomery et al, 2005a(Montgomery et al, , 2005b.…”
