Child maltreatment severity, chronic substance abuse, and disability status.

Abstract: Child maltreatment severity is an important predictor of CID status, and was more likely to explain CID than years abusing drugs and alcohol in our clinical sample. Trauma-informed concurrent treatment for 3 clinical conditions of CID, childhood maltreatment, and SUD is needed for the majority of individuals seeking treatment for SUD. (PsycINFO Database Record

“…Those who survive experience long-term adverse effects, such as physical, psychological, and reproductive health issues throughout their life (Sethi et al, 2018). Previous studies have demonstrated that maltreated children are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior, struggle with suicidal ideation, attempted suicide, experience an early onset of mental disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety) and substance misuse, and demonstrate a lower level of education, employment, and earnings as adults than children who have not experienced any maltreatment (Currie & Widom, 2010; Kisely et al, 2018; Miller et al, 2013; O’Sullivan et al, 2018; Williams et al, 2010).…”

“…CM is associated with a host of negative outcomes that extend into adulthood for the victim. These outcomes include psychological and behavioural problems (e.g., relational challenges, substance abuse; Jonson-Reid et al, 2012;Paradis & Boucher, 2010), physical problems (e.g., disability, brain injury;McKinlay et al, 2014;O'Sullivan & Watts, 2018), sexual problems (e.g., sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy; Ajilian Abbasi et al, 2015;Gilbert et al, 2009), and long-term health consequences (e.g., cancer, liver disease; Gilbert et al, 2009;Krug et al, 2002). The effects of CM can also be observed before adulthood.…”
