Chikungunya and Dengue Fever among Hospitalized Febrile Patients in Northern Tanzania

Abstract: Abstract. Consecutive febrile admissions were enrolled at two hospitals in Moshi, Tanzania. Confirmed acute Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Dengue virus (DENV), and flavivirus infection were defined as a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) result. Presumptive acute DENV infection was defined as a positive anti-DENV immunoglobulin M (IgM) enzyme-linked immunsorbent assay (ELISA) result, and prior flavivirus exposure was defined as a positive anti-DENV IgG ELISA result. Among 870 participants, PCR testing was pe… Show more

“…This is in line with recent findings from Tanzania indicating that CHIKV mainly circulates in children during endemicity periods. 8 Although our study was not designed to validate diagnostic kits for the detection of specific antibodies against CHIKV, we observed that, in 94.5% of samples, a positive result by CHIKV IgG ELISA and CHIKV IgG IIFA was confirmed by MNTA, indicating a good specificity of the combination of these commercial methods. Conversely, all 18 samples that tested IgM-positive against CHIKV by ELISA were judged as false positive when evaluated by CHIKV IgM IIFA and MNTA, suggesting a poor performance in terms of specificity for the ELISA IgM kit.…”

“…Although dengue is recognized as a significant public health problem in the AsiaPacific and Americas-Caribbean regions, it is underrecognized and underreported in Africa. 16 As Aedes species are found widely throughout much of Africa, and given rapid population growth and unplanned urbanization, potential for DENV transmission in Africa is substantial. 17,18 Recent global estimates indicate that Africa's dengue burden is nearly equivalent to that of the Americas.…”

“…Also, intestinal sickness should have been over-analyzed in various parts of Tanzania [25][26][27], mostly because of absence of differential pathogen analysis separated from jungle fever [28], including dengue and Chikungunya. Late examinations in Tanzania have uncovered that patients with intense dengue and Chikungunya disease are frequently misdiagnosed and treated with hostile to malarial or anti-microbial [29,30]. The advancement of medication safe intestinal sickness strains (due to over-recommending of anti malarial [31].…”
