“…1948 was the first year of significant numbers resettled in Australia; peak years were 1949-50. 10 Australian selection procedures initially favoured Balts, as less likely than Slavs or Jews to offend Australian racial sensibilities, 11 but later contingents included many Slavs, including Russians (mainly former Soviet citizens), Ukrainians (a mixture of pre-war Soviet and pre-war Polish citizens), and Poles (among whom were undoubtedly many former Soviet citizens of Russian and Ukrainian ethnicity falsely claiming Polish nationality 12 ). At least 50,000 former Soviet citizens (including Balts) were among the 180,000 DPs resettled in Australia.…”
