Chicken line-dependent mortality after experimental infection with three type IIxIII recombinant Toxoplasma gondii clones

Abstract: Three genetically different clones of Toxoplasma gondii, also different in mouse virulence, were studied by experimental infection in chickens. For the experiments, four chicken lines were used, which differed in phylogenetic origin and performance level: two white egg layer lines, one with high laying performance (WLA), one with low (R11) and two brown layer lines, also displaying high (BLA) and low (L68) egg number. Chickens were intraperitoneally infected with three different T. gondii isolates representing… Show more

“…Effect of breed/strain of chickens, T. gondii genotype on toxoplasmosis in chickens Breed or strain of chicken can influence the course of T. gondii infection (Schares et al, 2017b). One-day-old chickens of two lines (white layer, line A, brown layer, line B) inoculated intravenously with tachyzoites of a cross line of Type II/Type III T. gondii strain; higher mortality was observed in line A chickens (Schares et al, 2017b). Serum antibody levels assessed by SAG1-ELISA at 31 days p.i.…”

“…MC-qPCR was essentially performed as described [ 29 ] with some slight modifications [ 22 ]. For the PD-qPCR, tissues were digested [ 11 , 30 ] and the qPCR performed on digests as described [ 31 , 32 ] using primers and a probe targeting the 529 bp repeat of T. gondii [ 33 ].…”
