The poultry industry, highly prevalent worldwide, generates approximately 7.7 × 106 metric tons of chicken feathers (CFs), which become a major environmental challenge due to their disposal when considered waste or due to their energy transformation consumption when considered by-products. CFs are mainly composed of keratin (approximately 90%), which is one of the most important biopolymers whose inherent characteristics make CFs suitable as biopolymer fibers (BPFs). This paper first assesses the morphological and chemical characteristics of these BPFs, through scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and then evaluates the waste valorization of these BPFs as a sustainable alternative for fiber-reinforcement of earthen mixes intended for earthen construction, such as adobe masonry, rammed earth, and earthen plasters. In particular, four earthen mixes with increasing doses of BPFs (i.e., 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1% of BPFs by weight of soil) were developed to evaluate the impact of BPF-reinforcement on the capillary, mechanical, impact, and abrasion performance of these earthen mixes. The addition of BPFs did not significantly affect the mechanical performance of earthen mixes, and their incorporation had a statistically significant positive effect on the impact performance and abrasion resistance of earthen mixes as the BPF dose increased. On the other hand, the addition of BPFs increased the capillary water absorption rate, possibly due to a detected increment in porosity, which might reduce the durability of water-exposed BPF-reinforced earthen mixes, but a statistically significant increment only occurred when the highest BPF dose was used (1%).

Research on waste tire pyrolysis carbon black (PCB) in bitumen mixtures indicates that it has excellent high-temperature rutting resistance; however, the degradation of low-temperature crack resistance and water stability of PCB-modified asphalt limits its wide application. Therefore, the low-temperature crack resistance and water stability of PCB-modified hot-mix asphalt (HMA) were enhanced by addition of waste chicken feather (WCF). Based on the response surface methodology (RSM), a variance analysis (ANOVA) and P-value test of the model response coefficient were carried out, and the performance prediction models of percentage air voids (VV) in bituminous mixtures, 30-min Marshall stability (MS), and 48-h MS were obtained. The interaction effects of different independent variables on response variables were analyzed. In addition, the optimal solutions of multiresponse variables obtained by the response optimizer were 0.20% PCB content, 0.36% WCF content, shearing time of 5.78 min for WCF, and 6.66% asphalt-aggregate ratio. The corresponding performance index prediction values were 4.00% VV, 12.80 kN 30-min MS, and 12.65 kN 48-h MS. The road performance test results demonstrated that incorporating WCF improved the high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature crack resistance, and water stability of PCB-modified hot-mix asphalt. This study provides a precise performance prediction model for adding PCB and WCF to HMA.

The road is one of the most important infrastructures. The community needs it because the road functions to connect the source of production. Asphalt is an aggregate binding material in road pavement construction, which plays an important role in determining road pavement performance. Road Pavement, in general, uses materials that are still fairly common. This study uses a fine aggregate of crushed concrete specimens. The method used is an experiment on the addition of concrete test specimens with percentages of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. Marshall method which is the basis for calculating the stability value and flow. the results of 5 Marshall test samples of asphalt concrete mix utilizing concrete waste obtained the characteristics of the average value of the study that all had met Highways' requirements at a VMA value of 18.22%, a value of 4.22 VIM.%, VFB value 75.04%, STABILITY value 4806 kg, FLOW value 3.24 mm, and Marshall Quotient (MQ) value 14958.1 kg / mm.
