Chiasma localization, heterochromatin and synaptonemal complexes in the grasshopperPyrgomorpha conica

Abstract: Surface-spread synaptonemal complexes and chiasma distributions in spermatocytes with different C-banding patterns and chiasma distributions in oocytes were analyzed in the grasshopper Pyrgomorpha conica. Male meiosis was characterized by a proximal/distal chiasma localization and complete pairing of homologous chromosomes at pachytene. However, there were indications of a relationship between the frequency and location of pairing initiation sites and chiasma distribution. The presence of a proximal supernumer… Show more

“…5 D). Of course, this assumption should inevitably be considered under the general restrictions on chiasma formation produced by heterochromatin [del Cerro et al, 1996;del Cerro et al, 1997], recombination hot-spots [Kauppi et al, 2004;Baudat and de Massy, 2007], and interference events [Mather, 1938;Fox, 1973;Bishop and Zickler, 2004]. Likewise, in S. grossum spermatocytes the initiation of recombination precedes synapsis.…”
