Chest Wall Reconstruction using Gore-Tex^|^#174; Dual Mesh

Abstract: Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of chest wall reconstruction using a relatively new expanded polytetrafluoroethylene prosthesis Gore-Tex ® dual mesh. Methods: We reviewed charts of 11 patients who underwent bony chest wall resection from April 2006 to January 2011. Results: Six patients underwent three ribs resection, three patients underwent two ribs resection, and the other two patients underwent sternal resection. Of six patients after three ribs resection, three underwent recons… Show more

“…Use of a chest drain under negative pressure may prevent complications of seroma and infection; however, it also facilitates a high degree of adhesion between the dual mesh and adjacent tissues. 12,15) In this case, the postoperative course was uneventful, and the chest wall deformity was perfectly reconstructed by the dual mesh as evidenced by 3-D CT. On the basis of our experience, we propose chest wall reconstruction using a dual mesh as a safe and effective procedure.…”

“…12) This material has been successfully used for the repair and reconstruction of the abdominal wall in cases of ventral incisional hernia or large hiatal hernia; 13,14) however, only a few surgeons have reported lateral chest wall reconstruction using Gore-Tex ® dual mesh. 12,15) The advantages of this material are its ability to stabilize the chest wall and the development of fewer adhesions to inner organs. Conversely, seroma is the most common complication that occurs after prosthetic reconstruction.…”

“…Biological meshes such as bovine pericardium mesh [ 3 , 6 , 8 ] and synthetic meshes such as polytetrafluoroethylene (Vicryl Ethicon, Sommerville, NJ), polypropylene [ 3 , 7 , 8 ] or Gore-Tex® Dual Mesh [ 9 ] are widely used.…”

“…Various procedures have been described to reconstruct large defects of the anterior chest wall, such as musculocutaneous flaps [ 15 ], bone allografts [ 16 ], Gore-Tex dual mesh [ 17 , 18 ], sandwiched polypropylene mesh [ 8 ] and titanium plating [ 19 ]. The ideal prosthetic material should be readily available, easy to use, durable, adaptable, resistant to infection and of low cost.…”
