Chest CT features of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

Abstract: A new type of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is rapidly spreading worldwide and causes pneumonia, respiratory distress, thromboembolic events, and death. Chest computed tomography (CT) plays an essential role in the diagnosis of viral pneumonia, monitoring disease progression, determination of disease severity, and evaluating therapeutic efficacy. Chest CT can show important clues of 2019-nCoV disease (also known as COVID-19) in patients with an appropriate clinic. Prompt diagnosis of COVID-19 is essential to prevent… Show more

“…15,16,17 COVID-19 pneumonia has typical radiological signs in chest CT like unilateral or bilateral ground-glass opacities and consolidation with or without vascular enlargement, interlobular septal thickening, and air bronchogram sign. 18 In our study we found no specific involment in temporal bone. No typical CT findings and interestingly no effusion in mastoid cells or middle ear.…”

“…By June 3, 2020, there were more than 6.2 million approved cases with COVID-19 and more than 370,000 COVID-19 related deaths worldwide [ 2 ]. Although the detection of viral RNA in nasopharyngeal swabs or tracheal aspirates by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the gold standard for diagnosis, chest computed tomography (CT) can provide valuable information about the diagnosis, disease severity and patients prognosis [ [3] , [4] , [5] ]. Although some of the COVID-19 patients are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, the mortality rate has been shown to be high in elderly patients and patients with comorbidity such as diabetes [ 6 ].…”

“…Consolidation is seen especially in the elderly population, and in a smaller number of cases. Consolidation can sometimes be seen as superimposed on ground-glass opacities in the early period (21) (Fig. 2a, b).…”
