Cheshire II: Designing a next-generation online catalog

Abstract: The Cheshire II online catalog system was designed to provide a bridge between the realms of purely bibliographical information and the rapidly expanding full-text and multi-media collections available online. It is based on a number of national and international standards for data description , communication, and interface technology. The system uses a client-server architecture with X window client communication with an SGML-based probabilistic search engine using the 239.50 information retrieval protocol.

“…Both Lynch [16] and Larsson et al [14], for instance, suggest a heuristic rather than algotithmic approach to searching, which will allow systems to make assumptions about user intentions, suggest alternative approaches in "zero hits" situations etc. Similar suggestions may be found in [4], [21] and elsewhere, and and there are systems in use or under construction which incorporate such features.…”

“…With this assumption, accurate estimates of the probabilities can be obtained and the documents can be ranked according to this probability of relevance Benitez & Chang (2002); Bohm et al (2007); H.R.
