Chemotherapy with Cyclophosphamide, Vincristine, and Prednisolone (COP) in Cats with Malignant Lymphoma: New Results with an Old Protocol

Abstract: This retrospective study in 61 cats with malignant lymphomas examined the efficacy of a well-established chemotherapy protocol (cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisolone [COP]) in the Netherlands, a country with a low prevalence of feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Twenty-two cats (36.1%) had mediastinal lymphoma, 11 (18.0%) had alimentary lymphoma, 7 (11.5%) had peripheral lymphoma, 8 (13.1%) had nasal lymphoma, and 13 (21.3%) had miscellaneous lymphoma (including renal lymphoma in 2 [3.3%]). Of the 54 cats… Show more

“…Cats with alimentary lymphoma had a significantly shorter median survival than cats with nasal or mediastinal lymphoma in the present study. Alimentary lymphoma has previously been described to have unsatisfactory treatment results [9, 10, 14], and mediastinal lymphoma has also been reported to carry a poorer prognosis [5, 17]. In the present study, the median age of cats with mediastinal lymphoma was 10 years which was older than that described in previous reports, and only 10 (53%) of the 19 cats with mediastinal lymphoma were positive for FeLV antigen in the blood.…”

“…Safety and efficacy of cyclophosphamide and vincristine administered IP to 26 cats with various forms of malignant lymphoma have been confirmed. 7 No specific IP-related adverse effects were seen in any cats of that study, 7 and cats had similar survival times after administration via that route, compared with survival times for other reports, 46,13 which indicated probable efficacy. A pharmacokinetic analysis revealed equal bioavailability of the parent compound (cyclophosphamide) given IV or IP; however, the active metabolite 4-OHCP was not measured.…”

“…Whereas 59% of all cats with lymphoma or leukemia were FeLV antigen-positive in one German study from 1980 to 1995, only 20% of the cats were FeLV antigen-positive in the years 1996 to 1999 in the same University Teaching Hospital [41]. In a recent study in the Netherlands, only four of 71 cats with lymphoma were FeLV-positive, although 22 of these cats had mediastinal lymphoma, which previously was strongly associated with FeLV infection [42]. A greater prevalence of lymphoma in older-age cats in now observed.…”
