Chemotherapy of malignant hemangiopericytoma of childhood.Report of a case and review of the literature

Abstract: The case history of a 21/2‐year‐old boy with malignant hemangiopericytoma of the retroperitoneum and bone metastases is reviewed and compared to other reports in the literature. This patient represents the first reported child in whom chemotherapy was effective in the control of metastatic bone disease. Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy each play an important role in the management of children with this disease.

“…12 Regimens including doxorubicin, interferon-a, and a variety of other agents have been used for recurrence, widespread metastases, unresectable disease, and palliation, but little survival benefit is apparent and the systemic toxicities of these drugs are significant. 12,32,33,35,36 Local recurrence is expected in up to 40% of cases. 12,37 Metastasis is common and is frequently delayed more than 3 years from treatment of the primary lesion.…”

“…Very few cases of infantile/congenital hemangiopericytoma of the tongue have been reported in the literature [3,17,19]. Though an innocent looking tumor, it has a high recurrence rate, Kauffman and Stout [12] found it to be 28% and Brockbank 52.5% [4].…”

“…This can be attributed to the rarity of this tumor and the insufficient number of patients for randomized trials. Nevertheless, previous reports have documented a significant favorable response rate to chemotherapy of soft tissue sarcomas, including HPC [5,[12][13][14][15]. The role of radiotherapy in achieving local control after incomplete surgical removal seems to be established in the majority of reports [10].…”
