Chemotaxis of Burkholderia sp. Strain SJ98 towards chloronitroaromatic compounds that it can metabolise

Abstract: BackgroundBurkholderia sp. strain SJ98 is known for its chemotaxis towards nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) that are either utilized as sole sources of carbon and energy or co-metabolized in the presence of alternative carbon sources. Here we test for the chemotaxis of this strain towards six chloro-nitroaromatic compounds (CNACs), namely 2-chloro-4-nitrophenol (2C4NP), 2-chloro-3-nitrophenol (2C3NP), 4-chloro-2-nitrophenol (4C2NP), 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoate (2C4NB), 4-chloro-2-nitrobenzoate (4C2NB) and 5-chloro-… Show more

“…10 and 30 mg SDS was placed in the center of two petri plates and chemotactic response was observed after 9 h of incubation at 37°C. In control plates, glucose (10 mg) was placed instead of SDS [22]. To evaluate the response of SDS grown cells towards both SDS and Glucose, SDS grown cells were mixed with semi solid PBM medium and poured in petri plates according to the drop plate assay method.…”

“…Bacterial chemotactic attraction to environmental pollutants can enhance biodegradation rates by increasing pollutant bioavailability, and this potentially leads to an improvement in bioremediation efficiency (1). Several studies have reported the isolation and characterization of bacteria with a chemotactic response toward a variety of hazardous aromatic pollutants, including pesticides (2, 3), petroleum-associated monoaromatic (4)(5)(6), and polyaromatic (7,8) and aromatic (9,10) derivatives. However, such information is relatively scarce for some of the recently recognized recalcitrant xenobiotics, such as chloronitroaromatics, furan, and chlorinated anilines (9,11).…”

Despite the numerous reports of the isolation and phenotypic characterization of chemotactic bacteria, the specificity of the bacterial chemotactic response to chemicals is actually determined by their chemoreceptors (12).…”
