Chemopreventive Effect of Acanthus ilicifolius Extract on Modulating Antioxidants, Lipid Peroxidation and Membrane Bound Enzymes in Diethyl Nitrosamine Induced Liver Carcinogenesis

Abstract: Acanthus ilicifolius (Acanthaceae) has received considerable attention due to its wide range of traditional usage in Indian system of medicine. The chemopreventive effect of ethanol extracts of Acanthus ilicifolius (AIEE) on N-nitrosodiethylamine (DEN, 200 mg kgG 1 )-induced experimental liver tumour was investigated in male Wistar rats. Experimental rats were orally treated with AIEE (400 mg kgG 1 b.wt.) for 1 week before the injection of diethyl nitrosamine and continued to be 14 weeks. The changes of lipid … Show more

“…Most previous reports were limited to cases in Western countries and the USA. Studies have reported that the annual incidence of ovarian cancer varies with race [8, 40, 41]. The genetic background and heredity of patients may be associated with different frequencies of histological subtypes and FIGO stage and thus influence prognosis.…”

“…Na+/K+, Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ATPases play a key role in the transportation of the electrolytes sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium across membranes [203]. The lipid peroxidation activity, which is often raised when in a cancerous state, plays a deleterious effect on ATPase activities and electrolyte levels [204], while electrolyte imbalance contributes to cancer progression [205]. Rutin reverses common electrolyte abnormalities, including hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypercalcemia, and hypomagnesemia in hepatocellular carcinoma-bearing rats [151].…”

“…proficiency of STZ to assist production of free radicals and causes oxidative stress [7]. The increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the reaction of enzymes, metabolism of xenobiotics shows the way to lipid peroxidation with consecutive cell disruption and toxicity [8]. Free radical increases in liver and kidney tissues may accommodate almost absorption of per-oxidize-able fatty acids.…”
