Two cases of primary paragangliomas of the lung are presented. The first occurred in a 69-year-old woman and was a grossly and histologically benign tumour. The other case occurred in a 33-year-old woman who had metastases to the peribronchial lymph nodes. This seems to be the second malignant case reported. No evidence of recurrence nor metastatic disease was found at follow-up, 8 months for the first case and 7 years for the second, respectively. The morphological and immunohistochemical findings are discussed and the literature comprising 20 cases is reviewed.

“…Tumours of similar structure, and presumed to arise from chemoreceptor tissue, have been described in the retroperitoneum (Zacks, 1958), in the organ of Zuckerkandl (Cragg, 1934), and in the lungs (Heppleston, 1958;Fawcett and Husband, 1967). Nodules resembling chemodectomas were found by Spain (1967) in a survey of postmortem lungs.…”

“…It is signi cant that reports of pulmonary paragangliomas are extremely rare during the last two decades when concepts of the APUD system [ 33 ] and neuroendocrine system [ 20 ] have emerged and the de nition of carcinoids became markedly broadened and inclusive. The current de nition of carcinoids differs signi cantly from Masson´s original concept [ 26,34 ]. According to the WHO classi cation of endocrine tumors, the term``carcinoid´´is applied to all tumors of the diffuse neuroendocrine system, excluding islet cell tumors, medullary carcinomas of the thyroid, paragangliomas, small cell carcinoma of the lung, and Merkle cell tumor of the skin.…”
