There has been considerable recent progress in understanding of the mechanisms involved in cooperation between T and B lymphocytes in the induction of humoral antibody formation (see for example 1), but much still remains to be learned. The discovery of an interaction between lymphocytes and the fixed C3 component of complement (2-5), and the demonstration by Nussenzweig et al. that C3 receptors are a feature of B-cell populations (6-10), raise the possibility that C3 might play a part in this process (11). Germinal centers of lymphoid tissue, in which the induction of antibody production m a y occur, contain B cells, fixed C3, and complexes capable of fixing C3 (12). I have previously shown that treatment of mice in vivo with the C3-cleaving protein of cobra venom (CoF) 1 suppresses thymus-dependent but not thymus-independent antibody production, suggesting a possible role for C3 in lymphocyte cooperation (11).

Serum levels of C1q, C1r and C1s in normal and pathologic sera

C1q, C1r and C1s protein concentrations were simultaneously assayed in sera of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and viral hemorrhagic fever as well as in healthy adult control subjects. Correlation coefficients between the three subunits of C1 were calculated and the sequential evolution of C1q, C1r, and C1s levels was studied in patients with SLE. In the majority of cases there was a good correlation between C1q, C1r, and C1s; subunit levels increased or decreased in a coordinated fashion. A marked discrepancy between C1q, C1r, and C1s serum concentration was observed in 3 instances. Low C1q coexisted with extremely high C1r and C1s values. It appears that C1r and C1s are closely linked while C1q may vary in a more independent way.

The role of complement in ingestion of nonencapsulated virulent group A streptococci by mouse peritoneal phagocytic cells was studied in vitro in the presence of type‐specific IgG or IgM anti‐M antibody. Type‐specific IgG anti‐M antibody significantly enhanced the phagocytosis, whereas IgM antibody was less effective in opsonization of the virulent group A streptococci. The extent of phagocytosis of streptococci sensitized with IgG or IgM anti‐M antibody was not influenced by the presence of complement. These results suggested that complement was not an essential factor for efficient phagocytosis of virulent group A streptococci.
