“…The methylene protons at C-i3 appeared as a broad singlet at ö 4.85 although these protons are reported as AB doublets at ö 4.83 and 4.77 (ii). The HETC0R spectrum proved that the previous assignments of C-13 and C-4' (11) had to be interchanged.…”

“…Characteristic is the occurrence of sesquiterpene !actones of the glauco!ide, the hirsutinolide and the elemanolide types (9, 10). The anal parts of V. brachycalyx from Malawi were previously studied by Jakupovic et al (11), who isolated two sesquiterpene dilactones, l6,17-dihydrobrachycalyxolide (1) and the related brachycalyxo!ide (2). The structures including the relative configuration were established mainly through 1H-NMR spectroscopy.…”

“…Recent pharmacological study proved that a polar extract from the leaves of V. condensata presented analgesic and antiulcerogenic activities (Frutuoso et al, 1994). Only few reports on phytochemical studies about this species have been published, some triterpenes (Bohlmann et al, 1981) and sesquiterpene lactones (Jakupovic et al, 1987) having been isolated. In the present communication we report for the first time the isolation of a steroid glucoside in this species (vernonioside B2), isolated previously from V. amygdalina (Jisaka et al, 1993); and its analgesic and antiinflammatory activities.…”
