ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis of the Double Perxenate of Lanthanum and Barium.

Abstract: ChemInform Abstract The hitherto unknown title compound (I) is prepared in aqueous solution at room temp. from Na4XeO6•3 H2O, La(OAc)3 and Ba(OAc)2 (yields given in g). It is contaminated by Na2CO3 and H2O. (I) is characterized by its X-ray, IR and Raman pectra. Furthermore, its thermal stability and its solubility in water (maximum concentration attainable 7.9•10-7 M) are investigated. For a comparison lanthanum perxenate and barium perxenate are prepared. A mixture of these compounds displays spectral data t… Show more

“…Perxenonates pertaining to octavalent xenon derivatives can be obtained by the following scheme: 81 Perxenonates are the starting compounds in the preparation of perxenates 82,83 and hydroxenates. 84 Perxenates of virtually all alkali metals, 85 alkaline-earth metals and actinide elements have presently been synthesised.…”

“…Over the ensuing decades, the syntheses of the binary xenon fluorides, KrF 2 , and oxide fluorides of xenon have provided a diverse derivative chemistry . Although thermodynamically unstable with respect to their elements, xenon oxides have also been isolated and characterized in macroscopic quantities for every known oxidation state of xenon except the + 1 / 2 and +2 oxidation states, i.e., Xe IV O 2 , Xe VI O 3 , Xe VIII O 4 , (η 2 -O 2 )Xe VIII O 3 , and [Xe VIII O 6 ] 4– . ,− No isolable oxides of krypton are known . Both XeO 3 and XeO 4 are shock sensitive, decomposing explosively with the release of 402 and 642 kJ mol –1 , respectively, whereas water-insoluble XeO 2 quiescently decomposes under water at 0 °C 2 over several minutes.…”

In contrast, [Xe VIII O 6 ] 4– salts are kinetically and thermodynamically stable at ambient temperatures and pressures and have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, , Raman, ,, infrared, ,, photoelectron, , Auger, Mössbauer, 129 Xe NMR, , and UV spectroscopy. Xenon tetroxide is generated by the reaction of concentrated H 2 SO 4 with Na 4 [XeO 6 ] and has been isolated as a pale yellow, volatile solid, and its molecular structure has been obtained from an electron diffraction study of XeO 4 in the gas phase .…”

“…21 Decomposition of sodium perxenate at 375 °C, accompanied by xenon loss, was observed. 22 Other perxenate salts that have been synthesized include those of cesium, 23 barium, 21,24 lanthanum, 24 and americium, 25 as well as Na 3 HXeO 6 ‚H 2 O. 26 Of the nine naturally occurring xenon isotopes, two are NMR-active, 129 Xe and 131 Xe.…”
