Abstract

Preparation, Crystal Structure and Photoluminescence of Lithium Magnesium Manganese Borate Solid Solutions, LiMg1-xMnxBO3. -The title compounds are prepared by solid state reaction of Li2CO3, MgO, MnO, and H3BO3 (Ar, 800°C, 12 h). Single crystals of LiMg0.5Mn0.5BO3 are obtained from a polycrystalline sample with x = 0.5 using LiBO2 as a flux (Pt boat 900°C). The samples are characterized by powder XRD and photoluminescence spectroscopy. LiMg 0.5 Mn 0.5 BO 3 (single crystal XRD) and the solid solutions with x = 0.0-0.5 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 8. LiMg0.25Mn0.75BO3 and LiMnBO3 crystallize in the hexagonal space group P6 with Z = 3. The monoclinic LiMg1-xMnxBO3 phases emit red light with a peak wavelength of 682-696 nm under visible light (428 nm) excitation at room temperature.
